Teruel is an interesting place to visit …though a willingness to walk is definitely an asset. The city suffers from the same problem as all other Spanish tourist attractions …there is almost nowhere to park your car. The concept of an out-of-town car park with a regular bus service is as missing here as it is in Morella & Cuenca (ancient walled Spanish cities with very similar parking problems).

You have three basic choices, pay the extra and rent a hotel room in the town centre (book well in advance), walk into and out of town or hire cabs. An out-of-town hotel will probably call you a taxi. Going back, I became a little creative and got the telephone number of a taxi firm from the tourist information office and called them from my Spanish mobile phone. I do realise that not all holidaymakers speak Spanish or own a Spanish mobile phone.

Like all ancient walled cities, Teruel is perched on top of a big hill, though inside the city walls things level out. The architecture is like nothing I have seen elsewhere and is worth the walk. The towers that bestride the city's portals are breathtakingly ornate!
