The photo (right) would've been better if some twit hadn't dumped two bottle banks and a refuse bin on an otherwise picturesque bridge ...but it gives you some idea of the layout of the place

Up the top of this steep hill is ____. I don't suppose it was entirely necessary  ...but those are 'stations of the cross' at each bend in the path. Spanish towns go in for this sort of thing a lot and ALWAYS up a steep hill! Below are some more street scenes (my attempt to give you  a feel of what Bocairent is like(

Moors (Arabs) invaded Spain and left countless influences on the country's culture and architecture. The original inhabitants didn't like it and took back what was theirs. This fact of history is the subject of fiestas all over Spain. For some reason Bocairent has gone overboard and has a whole museum dedicated to the subject (see right) and a fiesta (2 to 5 Feb) that is spectacular (the only time I have seen antique matchlock guns fired in the street)!

No you're seeing things, it's a bottle of booze with leaves and twigs shoved inside it. It's called Elberro. Mountain communities often cook up their own unique liquor. I encountered something similar in Cuenca (called Resolí) ...but this came in a posh bottle. I bought this bottle of Elberro from the same bar that served me with a glass of it ...the barman was ages in the back of the premises and jammed a cork into the neck of the bottle when he got back to the bar ...the bottle had the remains of an old label on it. Was I frightened of drinking it ...not when I have quaffed stuff that had dead lizards in the bottle!
