Plants
The most significant plants in the mountains and valley of Barx are: thyme, rosemary and common camomile ... Mediterranean plants. Less commonly found are ferns, heather and strawberries. Some only exist in the area …such as "Silene Diclinis" and "Anthyrrimun Valentimun.'' A plant with very showy blossoms in June is the "Periwig" (Hypericum Perforatum), an oil is extracted from this plant and used to treat burns and other injuries.

Trees
The forest trees are: the oak, the 'oven' (family of the ash-tree), some weeping willows, a few maples (Acer Opalus) and, in the decalcified zones, cork oaks and strawberry trees (Arbustus unedo). In the mountains of the Picaio and the Penya Blanca there are what remains of the Mediterranean Forest and no effort is spared to save and preserve its brilliance. In the centre of the plain in which Barx is situated is the esoterically named "Avenc de Doncella." This is covered with elms and some white poplars …these are what remain of ancient woodland that once extended from La Drova to El Toro. Enigmatic, beautiful, the chasm is the natural exit for the water that reappears beyond La Valldigna.

Fauna
The skies are dominated by the stately Royal Eagle …you will find it gliding above the crags seeking prey. Formerly, this was also the living environment of that other powerful bird of prey, the peregrine falcon. There are buzzards too! Within the forest the woodpeckers and the nightingales live together with weasels, rabbits, badgers and an animal that has returned to the forest after centuries, the boar. The calls most prevalent at night are those of the fox, the little owl, barn owl and red owl. Almost nowhere in the province would be complete without bats ...symbol of the football team!

FOOTNOTE:
I was the first person to translate most of this information into English. Somewhat on my coattails, Barx Council have now produced their own leaflet. It is worth getting a copy of this leaflet because it contains maps of both La Drova and Barx. You can obtain a copy of this leaflet by emailing Gandía Tourist Information (see below). Barx doesn't have such an office, nobody in the Town Hall speaks English and they don't tend to respond to well to emails. This site has a comprehensive map of email addresses of Tourist Information offices in Eastern Spain, probably the finest compendium of street market listings online and information for disabled driver taking a holiday in Spain
