"Fuente" is a Spanish word with a number of meanings; a fountain, a waterfall or a rising spring that is a source of drinking water. Anna's 'Fuente Alta' (pictured right) is a popular local dipping hole. The pretty green colour probably dissuades all but the most determined tippler!
Standing up close, it isn't hard to see how the 'Fuente Negra' (left) acquired its name ...whilst not exactly black, the water does have a strikingly grey tinge to it. The picturesque setting does make up for this!
Anna's old town has many things to delight the eye. The charming narrow streets are largely well kept and there is a gorge (see below) that I didn't venture into because my dear wife would never have made the climb back out of it!
The 'roving reporter' style that I use to record images of Spain means that I will, occasionally, come upon a purely local event, quite by chance. I thought the crowd outside this church were waiting for the conclusion of a local wedding. I spent the next hour partially deaf in one ear as a result of the string of fireworks that were let off when the effigy (far left and below) was brought out of the church for a tour of the neighbourhood streets. Note the haze of gunpowder smoke!
I never did discover the significance of the effigy ...but the Spanish people go in for carting these things around on saint's days.
I've never met anyone in Anna who speaks English. I found out that Anna has recently been 'discovered' by a tour company in Valencia and that one or two English-speaking people do live in Anna. The Spanish people appear to have welcomed this.
The problems with ex-pats always seem to start when they are present in enough numbers to 'organise' and 'adopt' a local bar
Anna has something called an "Albufera" .(I will save you the bother of reaching for a dictionary--this translates as a 'lagoon'). It's a very pretty small lake. People go boating and there are no swans ...only geese. I checked the English definition of a 'lagoon' ...it doesn't qualify (neither would the twit who called it a lagoon). I made a panoramic photo of the Albufera in a self-displaying programme file. Click the icon and choose 'open' from the dialogue box.
