Alarcón is one of those places that can look  intriguing  when looking at a map  -  its size and isolation were enough to make me want to look further. The view from just outside the place is stunning  -  it looks so much like a fairy tale that I took a series of photos and joined them up to make a panoramic image (that you can view below).

Back when there was no TV, people made their own fun  -  Spain's history ably demonstrates that this largely consisted of people fighting each other over scraps of land that any self-respecting commander would've marched right past without ever looking sideways!

Alarcón's defences owe more to nature than the  opportunists that built a fortified town on top an almost complete ring of precipitous cliffs. Having said that, the place was successfully invaded. The cost in human life doesn't bear thinking about ...I'm still pondering why anyone bothered!

The best-laid plans can always come around and bite you in the arse. Nicely fortified walls with nasty steep cliffs all the way round were a great idea when invading places was far more fashionable. These days it means you don't have much elbow room!!

Alarcón has two main attractions: the view from just outside the place (see the panorama (below) and the castle (now a Parador  -  see below and left)

The streets of Alacrón are well kept  -  it even has coach parties that make straight for the Parador (there isn't a great deal more to see in the place). Should you decide to go there, I should warn you that there is a nuisance in the free car park ...spends his day appearing to direct you into parking spaces you can see in the hope of conning money out of you.
